Simplifying church, background checks and a report from our youth

Simple Church

The first chapter of Simple Church was reviewed.  The assignment for the meeting on Oct. 20 will be chapters 2 & 3 and the study questions at the end of chapter 3.  Concerning Simple Church, it was agreed that we would not start any new ministry programs while we proceed through the process of establishing a mission driven process.  We want to be deliberate in our efforts to move away from programming.

Our New Parking Lot

It’s now finally here! After pushing pause for a couple of weeks, our new gravel parking lot is officially done and open for use. Please take advantage of it this Sunday, there should be enough room for at least 30 cars.

Members and Regulars

We would ask all members and regular attenders to fill this space before using the old parking lot. With the old lot being closer to the church building we would like designate that area for first time guests, disabled or elderly individuals. Our heart is to be able to bless as many as we can even with a parking lot.

For every good and perfect gift comes from above. – John 1:17

We are blessed to be a blessing. Thank you to all involved in this process.

The SBC – A Season of Study

Good morning church I hope that this letter nds you well after a blessed week of serving Him.

7) The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8) the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9) the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. – Psalm 19:7-9

It has been the heart of the elders to continue to succeed in maintaining open and honest dialogue with the body about discussions that take place within elders’ meetings, so on that note allow this report to ll you in with our most recent discussions.

On Tuesday September 8, discussions continued about our potential new affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention. It was decided at this meeting that after the most recent discussion/questions that have been brought up over the last month, both by the body and some of the elders, that it would be in the bodies best interest to postpone (until further notice) the vote to move to this aliation.

The reason for this most recent decision was due to varying opinions and concerns surrounding three main topics.

The Baptist Faith and Message vs. our Statement of Faith

This question was raised, “If we are aliating with the SBC and replacing our Statement of Faith with the Baptist Faith & Message, are we completely comfortable with what their document does/doesn’t say about any particular topic?”.

The Gifts of Holy Spirit

The following questions were asked, “Are we ok with the SBC’s conservative stance on speaking in tongues?”, “What is the convention’s understanding of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and do we as a church line up with them?”.

Female Teaching

Discussion arose around the following questions, “What is the churches stance/understanding on 1 Timothy 2:12, and would it line up with the SBC?”, “What would the SBC say about a female teaching a coed Community Group?”.

It is evident, due the diverse views of the elder board on these topics (and other topics), that we need to commit the next few months of our time as elders to studying through these together, and we invite the body to do the same. Unity in the body is more important to us than our aliation and alway will be. After our Tuesday meeting the elders have decided to commit meeting biweekly to discuss areas of doctrine and theology before attempting to move forward unanimously and in unity.

What does that mean about our aliation to the ABC?

Due to the nature of not publicly associating with this denomination for the last 4/5 years because of their stance on certain social issues that the Bible clearly addresses. As an Elder board we would still unanimously recommend removing our ocial aliation with them. This recommendation wouldn’t change how we operate or run as a church in the slightest (nothing would change, not even our constitution). All we would need to do is write a letter to the ABC asking for them to remove our name as an ocial aliated American Baptist Church.

The elders would ask you to still attend a meeting on September 27, but this time, to ocially vote on this recommendation.

Church thank you for your input over the last month or so. It is our heart to move forward in unity as the Lord Himself leads His church.

Elders Moment – June 2015 Update

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord, let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!  Psalm 34:1-3

Yes, praise the Lord that we serve a God who loves us and provides for our every need!

In response to the church’s decision to prepare to separate from American Baptist Churches, the elders shared a conference call with Pastor Ed Stucky of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).  He explained the difference between “working in cooperation” with SBC and becoming an SBC Church.  Ed provided a great overview of the SBC mission program, which is very exciting and robust.  Following the Skype interview, the elders had consensus on continuing to hold more discussions with SBC and to plan a meeting with a local representative, with a tentative goal of making a recommendation to the church at the Annual Meeting in August.

In order to keep the church body informed about finances, the proposed budget for 2015 will be presented to the church in a Q&A session after church on June 28th.  Copies of the draft budget will be distributed at that time. Following that, members of the Finance Team will be available to answer questions about the budget after worship services leading up to a vote at the Annual Meeting in August.   The proposed budget was prepared by the Finance Team, composed of elders, ministry team leaders and the church Treasurer, Brian Meacham.

As outlined in our by-laws, this year’s annual meeting will be held on August 9th.  The elders will set up a schedule for quarterly church meetings to be held after the annual meeting, to take the place of Town Hall meetings.  This schedule will be provided soon.  Please plan to attend these very important meetings in the life of the church.

The elders are using a book entitled, “The More with Less Church,” by Eddy Hall, as they continue to plan for church growth.  It was decided to use the book in a church-wide teaching, and to begin to examine the suggested practices found in the publication as we seek to be faithful to our Lord’s great commission to reach the lost.  This process will be called, “The Pillar Project,” and will include a comprehensive review of church ministry, facilities and future growth.  It is hoped to have a complete presentation ready for the Annual Meeting. We know you will be excited about the plans for continued church growth.

A timeframe was established to continue the Youth Pastor search.  Candidates will be sent a Youth Pastor Application and asked to complete and return it.  The responses received will be shared with the Search Committee who will determine whom to interview for the position.

Please continue to pray for your elders as we commit to do our best to lead and shepherd.  And remember, we are always ready to hear from you on any topic you would like to discuss. Contact us at elders@wilsonfbc.com

Elders Vs. Deacons

Even though church was canceled due to the cold weather, here is Stephen with a short video explaining the differences between the roles of Elders and Deacons.

Follow along with Acts 6:1-7

[1] Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. [2] And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. [3] Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. [4] But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” [5] And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. [6] These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. [7] And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

Thank You!

You Were Awesome!

I just wanted to take a quick minute before my day really gets started to say a massive thank you to everyone who volunteered on Sunday night, I don’t think it could have gone any better than it did.

The music, testimony and message came straight from the Lord and I am positive that He used each element to glorify Himself and draw those who were there to closer to Him. James, Tim and Brian, thank you for being obedient to His call on your life to serve, I am praying that the Lord would bless you for your efforts.

The food. There is only one thing to say about the food, it was out of this world. I am so encouraged by everyone who helped prepare this meal. Your pursuit of excellence to provide the best meal possible was both inspiring and contagious. I heard numerous comments about how good the sauce was, so that extra time you took with the garlic was definitely worth it. Thank you!

Those who served did so with class and efficiency. The food was delivered in no time and I didn’t see anyone waiting to eat. I believe the way you interacted with everyone was done in such a way that Christ was reflected through you. I know that your selflessness knocked down walls in their lives. Nicole and I personally got to minister to and pray for a man (Billy) as a result of your efforts, so thank you.

The youth. You guys rocked! The way you gave up your Sunday night for the sake of the Kingdom was incredible. I guarantee the simple fact that you were there and not afraid to get your hands dirty inspired those who were being blessed by your service. My prayer is that through your selfless acts you would lead and inspire older generations towards Jesus.

A super special thank you goes out to Phil for all of the time that he invested into this outing. You were awesome bro and it’s an honor to minister in His Name with you.

Shaun Smith the Executive Director texted me yesterday, here is what he said,

We are thankful for this! We hope only that you were even more blessed than we, or those we serve were, for it is always more blessed to give than to receive.

Looking ahead

We don’t have an official date yet on when or how frequently we are going to head up there, but I do believe the consensus was that this was something the Lord wanted us to be involved with. More details to come in 2015.

Thank you again church! It’s is a privilege to be one of your pastors and to minister in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ with you.

Love one of your Pastors
Stephen
